  6. Please take the time to review this file before installing and
  7. running WorldTime 2.1 in a network environment.
  8.

  10. ICONIC TIME DISPLAY
  11. -------------------
  12. Version 2.1d now automatically displays the current local time
  13. inside the program icon whenever the WorldTime window is
  14. minimized.  This feature replaces the "Iconic Time Display"
  15. option which was available in earlier versions, but updated
  16. the icon caption text -- leading to conflicts with any active
  17. Windows screen savers.
  18.  
  19. 2.1d corrects this problem, and will not cause difficulties
  20. when run in conjunction with Windows screen savers.

  23. WORLDTIME OPERATING MODES
  24. -------------------------
  25. When WorldTime is run without any command line parameters, the
  26. program defaults to "Normal Mode."
  27.  
  28. Normal Mode is the recommended operating mode for most users,
  29. and offers the most reliable performance whether the program
  30. is being run on an individual PC or in a network environment.
  31.  
  32. In Normal Mode, the WorldTime 2.1 initialization file
  33. (WTIME21.INI) is automatically stored in the host PC's default
  34. Microsoft Windows directory (e.g., C:\WINDOWS).
  35.  
  36. Normal Mode is specifically recommended when WorldTime is used
  37. on local area networks, since operation in this mode makes
  38. locating and accessing the WTIME21.INI file very easy.
  39.  
  40. Normal Mode limits ALL instances of WorldTime on the user's
  41. system to a single initialization file.  As a result, users
  42. will NOT be able to install and run multiple copies of
  43. WorldTime and run each with different configuration settings.
  44.  
  45. A second operating mode, "Private Mode," is available
  46. for the benefit of users who prefer to access the WTIME21.INI
  47. file from WorldTime's own directory (e.g., wherever the
  48. WTIME21.EXE file is located), not the default Windows
  49. directory.
  50.  
  51. To run WorldTime in Private Mode, the /P command line switch
  52. should be included in the WorldTime command line, as in the
  53. following example:
  54.  
  55. C:\WTIME\WTIME21.EXE /P
  56.  
  57. When run in Private Mode, multiple copies of WorldTime
  58. (located in separate directories) can be run concurrently,
  59. each one accessing its own set of configuration settings
  60. stored in a separate WTIME21.INI file.
  61.  
  62. Copies of WorldTime installed and used in a local area
  63. network (LAN) environment generally should NOT be run in
  64. Private Mode, since this can complicate management of the
  65. individual WTIME21.INI files (See Network Considerations
  66. below).

  68. The user can always check the operating mode of a currently
  69. running instance of WorldTime by opening the "About WorldTime"
  70. dialog box.

  73. WORLDTIME SUPPORT FILE PROTOCOL
  74. -------------------------------
  75. WorldTime 2.1 includes a number of modifications to improve its
  76. handling of initialization (.INI) and help (.HLP) files.
  77.  
  78. WorldTime automatically compiles a complete
  79. drive\directory\filename path for each WorldTime support file.
  80. Each path is stored in memory while WorldTime is running, and
  81. used by the program whenever access to a support file is
  82. required.

  84. The paths of the WTIME21.INI and WTIME21.HLP files are assigned
  85. according to the following protocol:
  86.  
  87. a) In Standard/Single-Instance Mode, the WTIME21.INI file is
  88. created and maintained in the default Windows directory
  89. (e.g., C:\WINDOWS) of the local user's PC.  WorldTime 2.1
  90. obtains the drive\directory path of the Windows directory
  91. directly from Windows itself, and assigns the INI pathname
  92. accordingly.

  94. b) The WTIME21.INI file is not included on the master program
  95. disk.  This file is automatically created by WorldTime 2.1
  96. when the program is first run.
  97.  
  98. c) The WTIME21.INI file is ONLY stored and accessed from the
  99. default Windows directory when the program is run in
  100. Standard/Single-Instance Mode.  If WorldTime is run with the
  101. Multiple-Instance Mode command line switch (/M), the program
  102. will store and access the WTIME21.INI file from the
  103. WorldTime default directory (i.e., the directory containing
  104. the WTIME21.EXE file).
  105.  
  106. d) The WTIME21.HLP pathname is based on the drive\directory
  107. location of the WorldTime executable file, WTIME21.EXE.  As a
  108. result, WTIME21.HLP MUST be located in the same directory as
  109. the WTIME21.EXE file.
  110.  
  111. WorldTime's default support file routines will automatically
  112. override any paths passed to the program via any "Working
  113. Directory" entries.
